Visa options
Which visa do retirees use to stay long-term in Thailand?
The standard path for retirees is the Non-Immigrant O (Non-O) visa, which is specifically designed for retirement. It allows long stays in Thailand and is renewable annually, making it a practical option for foreign retirees who want a stable, legal residence status. Retirees who meet higher asset thresholds may also qualify for the 10-year Long-Term Resident (LTR) visa, which offers a longer validity and fewer annual renewal obligations. Issa Compass supports applications for both.
| Visa Type | Validity | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| Non-Immigrant O (Retirement) | Annual renewal | Most retirees planning long-term stay |
| LTR Visa (Wealthy Pensioner category) | 10 years | Retirees meeting higher income/asset thresholds |
Financial requirements
What are the financial requirements for a Non-O retirement visa in Thailand?
To qualify for a Non-O retirement visa, you must be 50 years of age or older and meet one of two financial requirements: either 800,000 THB in a personal bank account (maintained for the required period before and after the application), or a monthly income or pension of at least 65,000 THB. A combination of 400,000 THB in a bank account and 40,000 THB monthly income is also accepted. The bank location requirement depends on your application path: for in-country conversions at Thai immigration offices, the funds must be held in a Thai bank account; for applications submitted from outside Thailand at a Thai embassy or consulate, the funds may be in a personal bank account. Each Thai province sets its own document requirements and may apply these rules with slight variations. Always confirm the exact checklist with the immigration office in the province where you plan to reside, or let Issa Compass verify your documents against current local rules before you submit.

Application paths
Can you apply for the Thailand retirement visa from inside Thailand or do you need to go abroad?
Both paths are available. If you are already in Thailand on a tourist visa or visa-exempt entry, you can convert to a Non-O at Chaeng Wattana immigration office in Bangkok (or the relevant office in your province). Alternatively, you can apply for a Non-O at a Thai embassy or consulate in your home country or in a neighboring country such as Laos. Which path suits you depends on your current visa status, timeline, and personal circumstances. Visas applied for at a Thai embassy abroad are issued as a digital e-visa PDF. In-country conversions and annual extensions are recorded as a physical stamp in your passport.
| Application Path | Where Applied | Visa Format |
